The Birth and Life of Opera

Opera was created in Florence, Italy by the Camerata which consisted of a group of people involved in the arts. They put together their first show which was ready in 1598 called Dafne.

It's really interesting that Opera almost didn't take off and was almost dead in the water. It's crazy because of how influential it is on history and the arts today. Many of the early Operas drew upon the concept of love, and religion. Opera was in a position of political influence and had access to a lot of influential people. The content that these composers included reflected the changing of times and many times controversial subject matters.

The composers for Opera continued to create Operas that had messages that clearly reflected the times. In the case of the Opera The Marriage of Figaro, the message was that the rich were treating their employees terrible. By the end of the Opera, the employees had succeeded over their master. This Opera in particular was foreshadowing for the revolutions to come. The operas definitely reflected the times in history and to make people really think about events that were taking place.

The documentary was very informational. I never knew how much influence opera had on specific events in history. I knew that art had that influence but I never knew how popular opera was.

Lecture Content Paralells

This is just a side note that I was thinking about after our last lecture.

In the past week, three of my classes have talked about World War Two. I love to learn about the events of World War II and the Holocaust. Both were grueling events that have served as a reminder to our world that cruelty still exists even in our industrialized age. For my sociology class we were asked to visit the St. Pete's Holocaust Museum before March. Of course I jumped on the opportunity as soon as possible and I visited the museum last Saturday.

I've read countless books on the Holocaust and watched so many documentaries. There is so much information because the Holocaust affected so many people. 5 million Jews were killed during the war and an additional 6 million disabled, mentally ill, and homosexuals were killed in either concentration camps or ghettos. The Nazi's killed 11 million innocent people in addition to all of the soldiers lost during the war. They stressed the idea of a superior race that they called the Aryan race. Hitler convinced his political party and followers that it was the Jews fault for the condition of Germany at the time.

The fact that all of these people could turn a blind eye and even help the Nazi's exterminate others is absolutely despicable. Anyone who says that a human life is no valuable really needs to check their moral system and codes. It's important to look back upon the past in order to make sure that the future doesn't repeat the past. The mass genocide of 11 million people will never be forgotten. Now it's up to the generations to come to make sure that something like this will never happen again.

We are incredibly fortunate today to have the technology that we have. It allows us to preserve history especially those stories of survivors of the Holocaust that are dying off.

The anniversary for the Holocaust remembrance day was this past Monday and the anniversary for the liberation of the deadliest concentration camp Auschwitz was this past Tuesday. It's important to take time and appreciate and educate ourselves about this kind of event that effected so many people.

I've been really fortunate because I've gotten to travel all over Europe. I actually got to go see an actual concentration camp which was called Dachau. During the war it served as a concentration camp that political enemies were kept. Actually being able to be there was incredibly sobering and bone chilling.

Raul Cuero

Dr. Raul Cuero is a very accomplished man with an unusual background. Growing up he faced a lot of adversity and low expectations from others. He was able to overcome this and he exceeded others expectations through creativity. I think that it is so important to show people your full potential if they say that they don't expect anything of you. To be able to express yourself through creativity and belief in yourself is a valuable life skill and it will get you far in life.

Cuero goes on to say that creativity is innovation and venturing into the unknown. If you are able to achieve this then you will surprise the people who don't think that you can succeed, so much so that it catches them off guard.

Creativity can be generated through nature and the observation of it. He talks about how he grew up in poverty basically and that he had to create things in order to train his mind. He says that children and adults today are at a disadvantage because they are born and live in relative luxury. They get so fixated on technology that they limit themselves. All of technology and gadgets that we own have come from nature. Therefore, nature should be observed and people should try to learn from it. Cuero also says that children are spending too much time on the internet and not enough time talking and interacting with other people. Ideas are expanded to create inventions when people converse and share their ideas with others.

With creativity, you have to be willing to take a chance. You can't be afraid of failure because that in itself is going to hinder the max amount of creativity or innovation that you're striving to achieve. Commitment and intensity is what is needed for invention. With taking chances, comes being patient and taking your time. It's not going to immediately happen, because it is a process.

With applying what he said in the video, I will definitely think about using a lot of my electronic devices less. I actually love hiking and just looking at nature so increasing that would be great. Not only do you get to enjoy the natural wonders of the world but you also get this sense of peace since it's not busy busy like city life. I think his message about being intense is a great tip! You have to be willing to just throw yourself into it full heartedly because otherwise you're not utilizing your full potential. You're only cheating yourself if you don't one hundred percent believe that you can do something.

First Blog Post!

Hi! First blog post here. My first feelings of the class is that it's going to be a good semester! I've always loved art and it took art all throughout high school. I really wanted to take a drawing class here since I love to draw but then I stumbled across this class when I was looking to register for classes. I didn't really know what to expect out of this class but after going through the syllabus today I am very excited for the projects! I love being creative and so I really think that this class is perfectly tailored to what I want out of an art class!

For those of you who don't know me, my name is GraceMarie Schian. This is my second  year at the University of Tampa but I am a junior in credits! My major is criminology with a minor in history! I hope to graduate a year early in 2016! I was originally born in South Korea, but I was adopted and have lived in Arizona basically my entire life. I am the co-captain of the Women's Golf team here. I am also in the criminology club and a Pathways to Honors student mentor! When I graduate I plan to return back to Phoenix and apply to a local police department. My goal is to become a detective specifically working with special victims and cases involving juveniles.

From this class I hope to learn more about art history in general. I love history so learning about the technological advances in art will further my knowledge in the history field that I am pursuing. I hope to learn new methods for creating art with technology.
